By the time the race got to km 35 (1:45:50), the contenders had been thinned down to Kenya's Josphat Boit and the Ethiopians Guye Adola, Abeje Ayana and Adeledelew Mamo. Guye Adola used the tough course to up the pace and jettison competitors from the lea d group. Seven runners were still in contention at km 30 (1:30:32). Occasional h eadwinds made the return trip to Paris, running from east to west on the quays of the Seine, harder than usual. Shortly after km 10, Adeledelew Mamo (ETH) jumped across to his compatriot Guye Adola, followed by the rest of the favourites in the Bois de Vincennes before the halfway point (1:03:13).
Guye Adola (ETH), the 22 nd fastest marathoner of all time, with a personal best of 2:03:46, quickly broke away with two pacemakers while a chase group of ten units or so hover ed about a hundred metres back.
